With the end of the 2020-2021 Premier League season begins the summer of transfer muppetry. What players are on the move and what clubs will be making the big moves? No one truly knows, but the rumor mill is always turning. Manchester United is one of those clubs that always finds themselves in the middle of it.
Big clubs can’t escape the media and its rumors even if they have no intention of making a single move. So, with that said, I’d like to discuss a recent rumor surrounding Manchester United. Will Harry Kane be on is way to Old Trafford or will United dip their toes in the bargain bin for Danny Ings? Here’s why Ings could be the smart move over Kane this summer.
Harry Kane Leaving Tottenham
About a week before the end of the season Harry Kane stated he would like to leave Tottenham at season’s end. Kane also noted he’d like the whole ordeal to be sorted prior to the Euros. With three years left on his contract, Spurs can command almost any price they’d like. And why shouldn’t they? Kane is coming off of one of his best seasons yet, finishing the campaign as the leagues highest goal scorer and assist leader. Kane has gone from one of the greatest strikers in the world to perhaps one of the best footballers on the planet. There’s no denying his immense talent and he would surely make a club like Manchester United instant title contenders. But, can any club truly afford him right now?
There is the possibility that Spurs will honor his request to leave and Kane may be able to dictate a lower asking price. That is if agreements were made between Kane and the club already. Which does seem to be the case according to Kane. Although Spurs will surely be asking for something well over 100 million pounds. So, with that price who can afford him? Perhaps United, but most likely that price only leaves room for Chelsea, Manchester City, and PSG. Kane has already made it clear though that he wishes to stay in England, and going to a city rival would be very unlikely. That leaves City, but reports are that United are in for him as well. Perhaps United can finagle a way to provide some cash, or maybe this is how the Glazers think they can win over some fans.
What does Kane at United look like though? Well, I think it makes the club absolute title favorites next season alongside Man City and maybe Chelsea. But with that being said, it’s not the move I’d like to see. This is a scenario where I’d actually love to see the club go into the bargain bin. So, spend 150 million pounds on Harry Kane? Or, spend 30 million pounds on Danny Ings?
Danny Ings? But Why?
I know what you’re thinking, Danny Ings over Harry Kane is absolutely ridiculous. And, I’d honestly have to agree with you, but that’s if you’re only looking at the comparison between the two players. What we really have to look at is what Manchester United needs in order to not only become legitimate title challengers but title challengers for years to come. So, how does Ings help United achieve that?
A move for Danny Ings saves United over 100 million pounds. The move also means Untied add a proven Premier League goalscorer to its already talented front line. And most importantly it means United can make more than one move this summer. Buying Danny Ings for around 30 even 40 million pounds leaves maybe 100 million more pounds to strengthen the backline and the midfield. Danny Ings signing for United means United may also bring in Declan Rice and a strong CB to partner Mcguire in the backline. So, buying Ings means we can add more talent to the squad and strengthen the squad overall.
Danny Ings is Actually a Beast
Danny Ings has been overlooked through the years due to injury, but when healthy he’s shown just how good of a player he can be. Ings had a terrible time with Liverpool, primarily due to injury. Although, once healthy Ings couldn’t crack the clubs stellar front line. So, he went out on load to Southampton. The move would eventually become permanent and here’s why.
Southampton brought in Danny Ings with the option to buy in 2018. That season Ings scored 7 goals in 24 appearances for a struggling Southampton. The next season, with a full year under his belt at the club, Ings scored 22 goals in 38 appearances. Some of the goals he scored that year were absolutely outrageous as well and he provided the club with a constant threat. Scoring 20 plus goals for any club outside the top six is extremely impressive. The following season (2020-2021) Ings scored 12 goals while missing a large part of the season through injury.
2021 Could be one of the Club’s Best Summers Yet
Danny Ings is a tremendous striker and his only weakness is his injury history. But, with a price estimated around 30 million pounds I believe it’s worth the risk. Especially when you take into account the club also has Cavani and Greenwood. Danny Ings gives us another good attacking option on the cheap, who can chip in 20 plus goals in a season. Ings also enable the club to spend in other areas. Lastly, bringing in Kane only creates a dilemma with Cavani and Greenwood. Manchester United buying Danny Ings means it buys more valuable time to allow Greenwood to mature and strengthen the squad overall.
