Reports from Italy suggest Ole Gunnar Solskjær has been keeping close tabs on Alex Meret. The current Napoli keeper is an option that United wants to keep open, in case Dean Henderson or David De Gea leave the club in the coming seasons.
Also, Sheffield United made a bid for £12m to sign a goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale, as a replacement for Henderson. It appears that Henderson is unlikely to go back to Sheffield United on loan next season. Unless Manchester United finds another suitor for Henderson, then he will be battling De Gea for game time in the coming season.
De Gea v. Henderson
If Dean Henderson continues his rise to stardom, then he will be wanting regular first-team football. That leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjær with the extremely hard decision of choosing Henderson or De Gea.
With De Gea being the former world’s top keeper and Henderson becoming England’s #1, neither of them want to be a benchwarmer. Regardless of which keeper Ole chooses, the other will likely want to leave United in pursuit of more game time.
Back-Up Plans
Sergio Romero would like some time away from United if Henderson returns from loan permanently this season. This loss of Romero is massive. United will be in rapid pursuit of another class backup keeper. For the first season, Henderson may fill that void until he gets the chance at De Gea’s spot, but he won’t want to stay a backup forever. After Ole chooses Henderson or De Gea to become his top keeper, then United will need a backup again.
Alex Meret has been named as Ole’s top target. Rumors have also flowed around Kasper Schmeichel, who would love the opportunity to follow in his father’s footsteps. If Romero was loaned out instead of sold, then he could come back to Old Trafford ready to retain his position as the second choice. However, these are all still rumors and only time will tell what Ole decides for his team.
Glory Glory Man United.
