Match Preview: Aston Villa vs. Manchester United

Manchester United return to Premier League action this weekend, as Erik ten Hag’s men travel to Villa Park for Sunday afternoon’s showdown with Aston Villa.

Having extended their unbeaten run to nine games with a Europa League victory over Real Sociedad, the Reds narrowly missed out on advancing as Group E winners by just one goal.

Ten Hag confirmed that attacking trio Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho and Antony will all be assessed ahead of the game against Unai Emery’s side. All three players remained in Manchester ahead of our trip to Spain earlier this week, with the aim of better preparing them for our clash at Villa Park this weekend.

When asked about their availability after our 1-0 victory at the Reale Arena on Thursday evening, the Dutchman said: ”It’s difficult to say in this moment. I have to talk with the medical and the performance team, as they did a programme in Manchester. I have to hear how their progress was and if they can be available for Sunday’s match.”

Bruno Fernandes will definitely miss the match with our Portuguese midfielder having accumulated five bookings so far this season. His one-game suspension was confirmed following a late caution in our victory over the Hammers at Old Trafford last weekend.

FORM GUIDE

Having now not suffered defeat since our 6-3 loss against Manchester City at the start of October, United are in excellent form heading into Sunday’s contest.

Currently occupying fifth place in the Premier League table, Ten Hag’s men could climb as high as third should results go our way this weekend.

Top scorer Marcus Rashford will be bidding to build on his impressive tally of nine goals so far this season, following on from his match-winning header against West Ham at Old Trafford.

Last season’s league meeting at Villa Park ended 2-2 in January, when Bruno Fernandes’s double was cancelled out by late goals from Jacob Ramsey and Philippe Coutinho.
