The narrative throughout Manchester United’s recent slump has been that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now needs better players in the summer. The question should really be whether he is the man to lead them into it.
The last time Cardiff beat United was before a man first went into space. The Bluebirds also took more points – six – than United – five – in their last six games. That’s a relegated side, and not a very good one, winning 2-0 at Old Trafford. It also meant they finished the season with just two home clean sheets.
United have now finished 32 points behind the champions, and exactly the same distance from the team in 18th. This beyond some notion that the players are not good or motivated enough.
If challenging for the title, as Ed Woodward wants, is the name of the game, Ole should not really be at the wheel.
