Great news Reds! Manchester United have decided to execute the 1-year extension in Nemanja Matic’s contract through 2021.
Matic has played a key role in shoring up United’s defense over the past 6-weeks. Over the course of the 2019-2020 season, Matic featured 20 times and we’ve kept 14 clean-sheets over those games.
More from Daily Mail below:
Manchester United have triggered a clause in Nemanja Matic’s contract to extend his current deal by a year.
The midfielder had just over three months left on his contract but United have opted to extend his stay until at least 2021.
Matic had looked destined to leave United in the summer with several clubs around Europe, including Inter Milan, waiting to sign him on a free.
However, the Serbian has convinced boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he still has a future at United, having rediscovered his best form since the turn of the year.
The 31-year-old has played an integral role in United’s resurgence which had seen them close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea before the Premier League season was suspended until April 3 due to the coronavirus crisis.
The club are exploring the possibility of handing the midfielder an even longer deal and talks are ongoing at the moment.
With uncertainty around how long the Premier League will be affected by the coronavirus pandemic, clubs are expected to try and secure players who are approaching the end of their contracts on new short-term deals.
The widespread postponement of leagues around the continent has raised the prospect of players’ deals expiring before the end of their respective campaigns.
Overall, this feels like a smart move for Manchester United. Matic is a seasoned veteran and Premier League winner who can provide loads of value when playing once a week.
My favorite goal from the Serbian…
