There are moments in football when prudence becomes another word for fear. Manchester United have spent more than a decade shopping like a drunk man at airport duty free, dazzled by labels, paying too much and waking up with nothing they actually needed. That history should make the club cautious. It should not make them timid.
Aurélien Tchouaméni is the kind of player who justifies abandoning the calculator.
Reports suggest Real Madrid are prepared to listen to offers, with a fee around £68 million being discussed. United have already added Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, but the midfield still lacks the essential piece: a proper defensive anchor who can protect the back line, control the middle and allow everyone around him to play with less fear.
Tchouaméni is not merely another large man who enjoys contact. He won 66.7% of his ground duels and 73.8% of his aerial duels in La Liga last season, the best rates among midfielders who played at least 2,000 minutes. Those numbers tell you something important. When the ball becomes disputed territory, when the match gets ugly and somebody has to leave with it, he usually does.
United have had enough midfielders who look good when the game behaves itself. Old Trafford needs someone for the bad weather. Someone who can step into the chaos, win the collision, take the ball and make the next pass without behaving as though he has just survived a house fire.
That is what the great number sixes do. They impose order. They make centre backs braver, full backs more adventurous and attacking midfielders less responsible for cleaning up everybody else’s mistakes. Their influence spreads through the side like heat from a stove. You notice it everywhere, even when you are not staring directly at it.
A proper number six is not a luxury item. He is load bearing. Remove him and the whole house starts making noises at night. United have spent years decorating the rooms while ignoring the cracked foundation. Tchouaméni would not solve everything, but he would make almost everything else easier to solve.
Yes, the price will hurt. Good. Serious players are expensive because serious clubs want them. United cannot keep spending £35 million here and £45 million there on compromises, then act surprised when the midfield resembles a committee assembled to investigate its own disappearance. Sometimes the cheaper option is merely the expensive mistake paid in installments.
Tchouaméni is 26, entering his prime and already accustomed to the pressure cooker of Real Madrid. He played more than 2,600 La Liga minutes last season, evidence of both his importance and durability. This is not a hopeful wager on potential. This is buying certainty at the most important position in the modern game.
United should negotiate hard. They should refuse to be humiliated. But once the serious number is on the table, they should pay it.
Break the bank, bring him to Old Trafford and give the midfield a spine again.
