Manchester United usually doesn’t spend big during the winter transfer window. However, last season they broke that trend and brought in Bruno Fernandes. Due to the success Bruno has had, United might think of bringing in a player or two in January in addition to Amad Diallo Traoré.
Ed Woodward recently stated, ” We will continue to support Ole with a planned, long-term approach to recruitment, focused on the summer windows.” While this quote can seem concerning to United supporters, this does not mean that United will only spend in the summer windows. Bigger signings are planned in the summer window. Meaning that Ronaldo and Sancho will not be signing for United in January, but the following is a list of players who could make the move to Old Trafford.
Amad Diallo Traoré (RW)
The 18-year-old Ivorian winger officially signed with United during the summer window. However, due to issues with work permits and team placement, he remains with Atalanta BC until the next window opens on January 1, 2021. Ole Gunnar Solskjær is extremely for Diallo to arrive for the Red Devils in January. Diallo comes a replacement signing for the missed transfer of Jadon Sancho.
Probability of Signing : 10/10 CONFIRMED
Hakan Çalhanoğlu (CAM)
The AC Milan midfielder began rumors of a move to Old Trafford a few months ago. While hype built around the transfer, it looks to have come to a standstill. The main reason that United will not sign Hakan is that the Red Devils do not need another CAM. The additions of Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek lifted some of the creative burdens off of Paul Pogba and United does not need another attacking midfielder at the moment. If Donny had not signed for United this summer, then this transfer would have potential. This deal looks extremely unlikely.
Probability of Signing : 1/10
Dayot Upamecano (CB)
Currently playing for RB Leipzig, Upamecano is looking for a potential future club. The move to Manchester United fits. In addition to Dayot looking for a massive club to join, United are in desperate need of a quick center-back. The search for a long-term defensive partner for Harry Maguire should end with Dayot. He is fast, strong, and good on the ball. The only issue being that Leipzig does not want to sell in the winter. The German club are far more inclined to make a deal in the summer when they have more time to rebuild before the beginning of a new season. While Dayot might not arrive at this window, he surely could become a Red Devil before next season!
Probability of Signing in January : 3/10
Probability of Signing in July: 8/10
Declan Rice (CDM/CB)
West Ham captain Declan Rice is pure class. He is strong in defense and a true leader on the pitch. Rice isn’t poor when shooting from distance either. However, if Ole wants him then Woodward is going to need to pay up. Coming from a competitor club, West Ham will not be keen to sell their captain. West Ham manager, David Moyes, still holds disdain for Manchester United, so he won’t to sell Rice to the Red Devils. Rice makes sense and would be a solid transfer, but he comes with a hefty price-tag.
Probability of Signing : 2/10
Harvey Barnes (LW)
The Leicester City winger is not the best option for United. In order to sign him, Woodward will need to overpay for a young English prospect. However, Barnes sounds precisely like a deal that Woodward would make. In the end, this deal has a high possibility of being a failure. Barnes could easily flop at Old Trafford and fail to live up to the standards at United. If signed, he will lack game-time behind Rashford and Greenwood on the wings and potentially end up like Dan James part 2. This deal shouldn’t happen, but it could.
Probability of Signing : 3/10
Possible Departures
Paul Pogba’s goal against West Ham will keep the slander away from him for a few games, but there is still a large number of supporters wondering how long Pogba will stay at Old Trafford. Due to his comments in the media, Pogba could be set to move on from United. However, his move is more likely to happen in the summer than in the winter window. There is still a chance that he could leave in Janaury.
In addition to Pogba, Jesse Lingard has been linked with a move away. His move would be Rangers in Scotland, on a loan deal with an option to buy. Dean Henderson was also linked with a loan to a Scottish club (Celtic) but it appears that Henderson will continue to fight for minutes in between the sticks at United.
Glory Glory Man United.
