If the rumors are true, Manchester United are in for the 31-year old Croatian winger Ivan Perisic, and are willing to swap Chris Smalling in a deal with the Italian giants.

Does United need depth, and experience, on the wing? Yes.

Does United have an abundance of center-backs? Yes.

But, while there are ageless anomalies like Tom Brady, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Messi… Perisic is not in that class and United shouldn’t drop a dime on what could be another losing investment.

Finance 101… buy low, sell high. Apparently Ed Woodward skipped that class with every bad piece of business that’s cost the club millions (Lukaku, Sanchez, Di Maria, the list goes on).

Perisic spent the 19/20 season on loan with Bayern, highlighted by winning the German Bundesliga (again). In all competitions the Croatian took the field 35 times, netting 8 goals and assisting 10.

United do need depth on the wing, behind Greenwood and Rashford, while Dan James continues to grow. It’s not a sexy signing, but would be a better financial move over Bale on loan. (Update, Bale is re-joining Spurs).

If this is a 1-for-1 swap, with no cash involved, great. Mediocre pick up at best though. This rumor reeks of Glazers and Woodward skimping the club when United should have locked in Jadon Sancho as the new #7.

As United fans, we need to demand that the club invest in top talent from around the world. United is not Arsenal. United cannot be content with “Top 4”. Settling for Perisic when we should get Sancho is not the United way, it’s the Glazer way.
