WELCOME TO MANCHESTER! United Sign Edinson Cavani “El Matador”

Intro

I can’t be the only Red Devil fan shaking their head right now after deadline day. Ole (and the fans) wanted Sancho, Woodward got us Edinson Cavani.

Cavani, 33, joins Manchester United after 7 years with Paris Saint-Germain, and before he’s even taken the pitch, the press is comparing him to the likes of Zlatan and Henrik Larsson when they joined United late in their careers.

The Good

The Uruguayan certainly brings experience to a young squad..

  • Copa America Winner
  • Italian Cup Winner
  • 6x French Champion*
  • 4x French Cup Winner*
  • 5x French League Cup Winner*
  • 7x French Super Cup Winner*

In addition to his trophy haul, Cavani has a consistent record of scoring goals season after season, throughout Europe and playing for Uruguay over the past 10+ years. If the striker can stay healthy, he could offer some additional goals, steel and experience in the front of the park.

He’s got the credentials, and with Ighalo seems to be on his way out, and he could be a leadership factor in leveling some erratic play… but…

The Bad

So ends another disappointing transfer window for United, with another buy of a player who’s already on his way out of European football.

Reportedly, Cavani was offered to clubs throughout Europe and no one wanted him. Which raises a question, why? Maybe it’s because he’s going to be 34 soon. Could it be because of his injury record the last few years? Maybe because there was a huge drop off in his play last season.

Or maybe it’s just all three. I’ll go with that.

I don’t recall United being a club that bought aging players to give them a fond farewell from Europe and/or football. I recall aging superstars going to the MLS for a few years and dominating there before calling it a career.

Edinson himself has already hinted at a stint with Boca Juniors before he retires. Was this really the best option for United? Or was this a panic buy from Woodward after he failed (again) to secure a Sancho signature?

The Ugly

This is Woodward incompetency at its finest. And we as fans need to rally and protest this terrible ownership with their terrible transfer strategy or United is doomed to repeat the Bastian Schweinsteiger, Angel Di Maria, Alexis Sanchez signings of the past.

All that said, Edinson Cavani is Red. And I’ll be backing him and the lads every match. Hopefully there’s some magic left in those old boots.

*- Let’s be honest though, like the Bundesliga is essentially “The Bayern Show”, France’s football league is owned by PSG… Marco freakin Verratti almost has more silverware than Steven Gerrard & Frank Lampard COMBINED
