Match Set Up
Manchester United’s U23s edged out Tottenham at Leigh Sports Village in an electrifying 4-2 thriller over the weekend. This marks three league wins in a row for United in Premier League 2. Neil Wood had the boys set up in a 4-3-3, with Anthony Elanga leading the line.
Paul Woolston started in goal and had a fantastic day between the pipes. New boy Facundo Pellistri got the start on the right wing and made the most of it. The game was tense, but United’s offense was enough to power them through. Let’s get into the match.
The scoring started quickly in this one. In the 13th minute, Pellistri used his blistering pace to get around his defender and fire a brilliant cross into the box. A cross that, 16 year old Shola Shortire, slammed in with a header, 1-0 United. After the goal, the Reds backed off and let Tottenham back in. In the 22nd minute, Marcel Lavinier fired in a nice cross that Kion Etete finished into the back of United’s net, 1-1.
The goal woke United up and they started to press again. In the 32nd minute, Shoretire found Arnau Puigmal at the top of the box. Puigmal smashed the ball into the opposite corner of the goal, 2-1 United. The Red’s had to do some defending and were lucky to not give up a goal. Their center backs, Teden Mengi and William Fish, did well during the half to keep Tottenham at one goal. Then in the 48th minute, Puigmal broke free and fired the ball in. United led 3-1 at the half.
Tottenham came out strong in the second half and attacked United’s final-third. Then in the 51st minute, Jack Clarke found Harvey White in the box. White buried the ball into United’s net and right away it was 3-2. The defense should have done better to clear the ball as out of the box. After the goal, Tottenham went on the attack. If not for some brilliant saves from United’s keeper, Woolston, the score would’ve been 3-3.
In the end of the second half, the Red’s defense did well to keep Tottenham from scoring the equalizer. Woolston was incredible in the goal. His heroics kept Tottenham from scoring on multiple occasions. In the 92nd minute, Elanga iced the game by showcasing his incredible speed and breaking past the defense. He smashed it into the goal, and just like that, it was 4-2. The game was back and forth the entire time, but United played hard and deserved the win.
It was a tight game through and through, but in the end United’s offense simply overpowered Tottenham. The Spurs’ defense had only given up 4 goals all season and gave up 4 to United during the game. The man of the match would have to be Puigmal. He scored two goals, one of which being the match winner. With those 2 goals, Puigmal is now leading the U23s with 6 goals for the season. Sixteen year old Shoretire also had a great showing bagging an assist and the opening goal.
It is also worth noting that Hannibal recorded an assist and was firing lethal passes all over the field. His work rate helped United stay deadly throughout the game. Pellistri had an excellent game as well, his pace was dangerous down the right wing. The U23s are looking to make it four league wins in a row this Friday at 2:00 PM EST away against West Ham. The way this team’s offense is looking, it doesn’t seem like any team can stand in its way.
